McMaster University Diagnostics Workshop “Developing Clinical Point-of-Care (POC) Diagnostics for Improving Healthcare Outcomes”
The Fraunhofer Project Centre for Biomedical Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing (FPC-BEAM) is hosting a workshop on the challenges and opportunities of developing clinical diagnostics to improve healthcare outcomes. The two-day workshop will bring together various stakeholders for presentations, panels and open forums to discuss the ideal POC diagnostic, POC development and the support systems needed to bridge the gap between academia and industry to bring these diagnostic healthcare solutions to market.

This lecture and workshop will provide an introduction to various concepts in patenting from the perspective of a researcher, comparing and contrasting differences between filing a patent application and submitting a journal paper. The lecture will also focus on different types of patent searches, including patentability searches, state of the art searches, and freedom to operate searches. Practical search techniques will be described, followed by an in-class exercise in which participants will practice their search skills with an example of a patentability search.
MassMEDIC will holds its Annual MedTech Showcase on the morning of Wednesday, October 10th, the second day of Device Talks Boston at the Westin Seaport Hotel, in the heart of Boston’s Innovation District.
This workshop tackles the process of developing new concepts or ideas that are designed to address well-defined clinical needs. Topics that will be covered include: (i) why ideation matters to innovation and new product development; (ii) ideation methods; and (iii) methods for finding the best ideas among a large quantity of ideas. The workshop also includes a group brainstorming activity where attendees will break into groups and will be guided through a series of brainstorming methods to develop a new medical device concept.
